Conscious sedation is a medical technique designed to make procedures significantly more comfortable by placing you in a state of deep relaxation, without the need for full general anaesthesia.
It is commonly used in situations where anxiety, discomfort, or previous negative experiences might otherwise make treatment difficult. This includes dental procedures, minor surgical interventions, and certain diagnostic treatments. Rather than being fully asleep, you remain in a lightly responsive state, breathing independently, while feeling calm, detached, and often unaware of the procedure itself.
The sedation is administered intravenously, through a small line placed in the arm. The medication acts quickly, usually within a few minutes, creating a sense of ease and mental distance. Many patients describe it as a feeling of “drifting” or losing track of time. Although you are not fully unconscious, it is very common to have little or no memory of the procedure afterwards.
Throughout the entire process, the level of sedation is carefully adjusted to your individual needs. Your breathing, circulation, and oxygen levels are continuously monitored, and your anaesthetist remains present at all times. This allows for a precise balance between comfort and safety.
Before the procedure, a medical assessment is carried out to ensure that sedation is appropriate in your specific case. You will receive clear instructions in advance, which include a fasting period (typically 6 hours for solid food and 2 hours for clear fluids). After the treatment, you will spend some time recovering until you are fully awake and stable. As the effects wear off, it is normal to feel slightly tired, and you will need someone to accompany you home. You should not drive or travel unaccompanied for the remainder of the day.
In Spain, conscious sedation is legally considered a medical procedure that must be performed and supervised by a specialist in anaesthesia. This framework is designed to ensure a high standard of safety, proper monitoring, and the appropriate use of medication.
For many patients, conscious sedation transforms the experience of treatment from something stressful into something manageable and, in some cases, remarkably straightforward.
